Social Security online retirement applications exceed 50 percent

Online Social Security retirement applications first became available in November 2000, with other types of SSA applications becoming available online since then.

Many Social Security services are available online today, including being able to complete online applications for Social Security retirement and spousal benefits, disability benefits and Medicare.

Use of online applications continues to grow. During the calendar quarter ending September 2013, the Social Security Administration received 579,063 retirement applications. Of these, 51.7 percent were filed online.
