As of December 2010, approximately 17.5 percent of the entire United States population received a monthly Social Security retirement, survivors or disability related benefit.  In Minnesota about 16.7 percent of the population received benefits, about 18.4 percent in North Dakota and about 18.7 percent in South Dakota.
