Q: Two of my friends started Social Security retirement at age 62. One received benefits for the month he was 62 while the other was first paid for the following month. Why?
A: The difference was probably due to when each was born during the month. SSA retirement can begin the first month a person is age 62 throughout the entire month. Based on English common law, a person attains an age on the day before their birthday. This means that a person is age 62 throughout the entire month if their 62nd birthday is on the first or second day of the month. If born on a later day, the person is not 62 throughout the month until the following month.
